Science returned to the streets at the European Night of Researchers

September 27, 2021

This meeting gathered science and society and has retaken, in its ninth edition, the face-to-face format in Santander

Attendees learned about science from 300 researchers, including 15 from IFCA

Science returned to the streets on the occasion of the ninth edition of the European Night of Researchers organized by the UCC + i of the UC, which has resumed the face-to-face format. This meeting of society with research, which aims to bring science closer to general public, has achieved a large influx of people of all ages and profiles who, attending to health recommendations at all times, have visited 24 stands of different research groups. Among other options, attendees had the opportunity to observe the sky with telescopes, build miniature siege machines, laugh and learn with circus-scientists and learn about the interactive ATLAS with which it is possible to observe climate evolution around the globe in recent decades.

The IX European Night of Researchers has been possible thanks to the involvement of more than 300 members of the scientific community, both from the UC and from mixed and non-UC institutions. All this in an intense day that this year is called GREEN 9 NIGHT (G9NIGHT), because it is especially dedicated to the European Green Pact. On behalf of the IFCA (CSIC-UC), 15 researchers from the Meteorology Group attended with the stand "A portal to our climate futures: the interactive ATLAS of the IPCC", where the operation of the tool was explained to the public and its importance to raise awareness in society about the effects of climate change, and the Cosmology Group with the stand "Visualize gravity", where, aided by a gravity table, the researchers helped young and old to understand the gravity as a spacetime warp and "saw" gravitational waves live.

AN INTERNATIONAL PROJECT

In addition, for the first time, the G-9 project has collaborated with Nights of the Jyväskylä University (Finland) and the University of Salento (Italy) through joint activities focused on the challenges of the European Green Deal and the 2030 Agenda. The European Night of Researchers, which is held in more than 370 cities on the continent, is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) –initiative to promote scientific careers in Europe–, which is part of Horizonte 2020, Framework Program for Research and Innovation of the European Union. Its main objectives are to bring the figure of researchers closer to the public so that their work and the benefits they bring to society are known, as well as to encourage the choice of a scientific career among students, eliminating gender barriers.
