"How Green Is Our Computing? Sustainability Initiatives at IFCA"
Scientific computing is essential for research, but its environmental impact is rarely made visible. This seminar introduces key concepts of sustainable computing, such as energy efficiency, carbon and water footprints, and the carbon intensity of the power grid, and presents the initiatives being developed at IFCA to measure and reduce this impact: energy monitoring of the data center, Wattnet, a tool that calculates in real time the carbon and water footprint of electricity consumption, and the integration of sustainability criteria into the European AI4EOSC platform.
Jaime Iglesias Blanco is a computer engineer at IFCA and a PhD student at the University of Cantabria. His work focuses on the sustainability of scientific computing: building on the monitoring and analysis of energy consumption, he develops solutions to measure and reduce the environmental impact of digital infrastructures, with the aim of integrating environmental criteria into the management and use of computing resources.
The talk will take place in the Luis Pesquera Room at IFCA at 12:00. Coffee will be served beforehand at 11:45.
*We encourage all IFCA staff, postdocs, thesis supervisors, and others to attend.
