My main research interest is to understand the active nuclei of galaxies and their influence on their host galaxies, mostly through multi-wavelength surveys (with X-ray surveys having a prominent role).
Related to the topic above, I am also interested in the applications of statistics and machine learning to extract information from surveys, from photometric redshifts to source classification and selection of unconventional sources.
I also participate in the Athena mission, the next Large-class ESA mission to explore the hot and energetic Universe. I am co-chair of one of its Topical Panels (Understanding the growth of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies) and Director of the Athena Community Office (led by IFCA), established by ESA's Athena Science Study Team to support its role as "focal point for the interests of the broad scientific community". In addition, I collaborate in the SPICA mission, pre-selected as one of the median M5 missions by ESA, which will provide a vital window into the cold Universe, mainly in topics related to its synergies with Athena.
Finally, I am also a determined practicioner of outreach, with regular participation on the activities promoted by IFCA and the UC, frequent talks at primary and secondary schools and, even, a couple of incursions into stand-up scientific comedy.
