Frontier Research in Astrophysics and Particle Physics: "Gravitational waves from metastable cosmic strings" by Valerie Domcke

Start date: 10/05/2021 11:45 End date: 10/05/2021 12:45

Dr. Valerie Domcke, from CERN will give us a talk titled: "Gravitational waves from metastable cosmic strings".

"Cosmic strings are topological defects which can be formed in phase transitions in the early Universe. In this seminar, I will discuss how cosmic strings arise in field theory, how they evolve and how they can be searched for by hunting for their gravitational wave signal. A particular focus will be on new developments regarding metastable cosmic strings, which decay on cosmological time scales through the pair production of monopoles."

The seminar will be held remotely via zoom due to travel restrictions. You are welcome to attend. The seminar is open to everyone at IFCA. After the lecture, Eusebio will discuss with the students and any teacher of the degree.

The format this year is slightly modified from previous years, but for the general public it is almost transparent: in the first part the speaker gives a talk of approximately 50 minutes, followed by an open session of approximately 10 minutes for questions from the general public.

After this, the general public is dismissed, and the speaker will remain with the students (and any master professor who wishes to stay) for an informal discussion which lasts approximately 30 minutes.
