Frontier Research in Astrophysics and Particle Physics: "Can the Dark Matter in the Universe be Black Holes?" by Bradley Kavanagh

Bradley Kavanagh, from IFCA will give us a talk titled: "Can the Dark Matter in the Universe be Black Holes?"

"It has been suggested that the Universe may contain black holes formed in the very early Universe, from the collapse of large over-densities. Such 'primordial' black holes (PBHs) would act as non-baryonic matter and could make up a substantial fraction of the dark matter (DM) in the Universe today. PBHs have become especially popular as a DM candidate since the first detections of gravitational waves from merging binary  black holes. I will briefly summarize the changing landscape of constraints on PBHs, including bounds from evaporation, lensing, gravitational waves, accretion and dynamical effects. I will also discuss an intriguing gap in these constraints, where asteroid-mass PBHs could be the last best hope for dark matter in the form of black holes."

The seminar will be held remotely via zoom due to travel restrictions. You are welcome to attend. The seminar is open to everyone at IFCA. After the lecture, Eusebio will discuss with the students and any teacher of the degree.

The format this year is slightly modified from previous years, but for the general public it is almost transparent: in the first part the speaker gives a talk of approximately 50 minutes, followed by an open session of approximately 10 minutes for questions from the general public.

After this, the general public is dismissed, and the speaker will remain with the students (and any master professor who wishes to stay) for an informal discussion which lasts approximately 30 minutes.
