International MasterClasses 2018: Hands on Particle Physics

The 14th edition of the International MasterClasses: Hands on Particle Physics will be held on Wednesday, March 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Sciences and at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria. This activity is organized by the Institute of Physics of Cantabria.

Audience profile: Cantabrian high school students

Recap: This activity takes place at IFCA and it is an educational journey promoted by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group. Students from all over the region will come to this research center, where some of our researchers will teach them about particle physics and measure methodology. Afterwards, students will proceed to make real measures from the Large Hadron Collider helped by our staff.

At the end of the day, youngsters will participate in a videoconference with Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Tbilisi (Georgia), Manila (Philippines) and Athens (Greece), where other groups of students are developing the same activity.

At nine o'clock, dean Francisco Matorras will welcome the students and after that, University professor Alberto Ruíz will make an introductory speech about the Standard Model of Particle Physics and large colliders. Next, IFCA researcher Jónatan Piedra will explain youngsters the CERN experimental methods basis. Using this knowledge, some students will analize real data from LHC (CMS, ATLAS, ALICE and LHCB).
