Professor Jesús Marco, computer specialist in the Physics Institute of
Cantabria (IFCA), has joined the president’s team in the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Marco completed his PhD in High Energy Experimental
Physics within the LEP experiment (Large Electron-Positron Collider) at CERN in
Geneva, Switzerland. Later on he has been IFCA’s director
for three years and
Science and Physical Technologies national coordinator at CSIC. Now, Jesús Marco is Vice
President of Research, Science and Technology.
During the last years he has held
various high-responsibility
positions. He has led many important experiments like, for instance, the activities focused in the search for the
Higgs boson. His teaching work at IFCA was divided in two different research lines:
"Experimental Particle Physics" and "Advanced Computing and
e-Science."
Marco has been
one of the main promoters -both nationally and internationally- of Grid
technologies for scientific use. Spanish contributions to the
new computer system for particle experiments’ next generation have been boosted, leading
to an outstanding computer network in Spain. He has also coordinated
the installation and operation process of the computing infrastructure at IFCA, which
houses one of the largest supercomputer of the country: ALTAMIRA.
